CHECK IT OFF

I am a lover of lists and crossing things off..

There’s only one problem. 

When it comes to the more complex, time-consuming tasks, I always save them for last.

I get great satisfaction out of getting a lot done in a short amount of time.

So therefore, I always do the “quickest thing first.”

That said, sometimes the many more small tasks I am accomplishing are not nearly as impactful as completing the one daunting task could be.

Most likely – the task you are dreading the most, is the one that can make the most impact on your success.

OH, THE DREAD

When I was a recruiter, I would always dread making phone calls.

What I realized though, is that if I didn’t make phone calls, I wouldn’t have any candidates to interview, and if I didn’t have candidates to interview, I wasn’t doing my job.

Phone calls were the catalyst to making me successful in the role.

Yet they still felt daunting.

I would put them off until the end of my day and I would be “busy but not productive.”

SOMETHING HAD TO CHANGE

Until one day I realized that there was a positive impact of me doing something I dreaded…

So not only did I start to make them right away, but I would circle the 1 or 2 that I was MOST nervous about and make those first.

As I began to do this, something amazing happened. 

It was almost like an adrenaline rush.

Crossing off the hardest task gave me incredible fuel throughout the day to continue with my work more joyfully, and more energetically. 

“There is nothing so draining as an incomplete task.” is a quote from one of my favorite short YouTube Videos, Eat That Frog! <<<A must watch. In the video, it describes how if the “worst thing you do at the beginning of the day is eat a live frog” nothing worse can happen in your day. 

If you are anything like me, you might be really great at procrastinating…. 

HOW DO YOU MAKE THE CHANGE?

Here are a couple tips:

  1. Use the 5 minute rule – if it can be accomplished in 5 minutes or less, even if you’re dreading it, just do it.
  1. Create your to do list and circle the item you’re dreading the most. Do that first thing in your day, and the rest of your day you’ll feel “light”. 
  1. Picture your future self – imagine how happy she will be when you have completed that hard task.

At the end of the day, procrastinating on something never makes you “feel” better. If you can do it today, why wait?
